Struggling painter Mike Gordon is disheartened when café owner Sam sells one of his paintings to customer Laurie Durant. Believing his work worthless, Mike tries to buy the painting back, but Laurie insists on keeping it, leading the two to share a romantic dinner. Mike quickly falls for Laurie, but she suddenly leaves town without explanation. Mike later discovers the painting was sent to Dr. Arnold Vincent, though the doctor won’t reveal why. Chris Sherwood, a friend of Mike’s, persuades him to visit a nightclub, where he is shocked to find Laurie performing as the featured singer. The club is owned by Rex Durant, a former boxer confined to a wheelchair, and Laurie is now his wife. Durant is searching for a new fighter and, noticing Mike’s prowess in a brawl, decides to train him. At Durant’s gym, Mike learns that Dr. Vincent is both Laurie's brother and Durant’s physician, held in Durant’s power due to a failed surgery that paralyzed him. Laurie remains with Durant to protect her brother from a malpractice suit. Adopting the name "Mike Angelo," Mike starts prizefighting. During a heated conflict with Durant’s henchman, Costello, Mike suffers a concussion. Despite his injury, Durant forces him to fight, having discovered both the painting and that Laurie loves Mike. Mike is badly beaten but manages to win the bout before collapsing from his injuries, requiring brain surgery. Meanwhile, Vincent is killed by Costello. In a twist of fate, Durant is struck and killed by a car when his wheelchair rolls into the street. Mike survives, leaves boxing behind, and is joined by Laurie as he recovers.
