Charlie Mason and Rusty Fleming are star reporters for a Chicago tabloid who are not only colleagues but also romantically involved. Though adept at uncovering compelling stories, their unprofessional and childish antics often create chaos. After one such incident drives their city editor to quit, Charlie is unexpectedly promoted to that position, as the publisher believes only another slacker could manage the unruly staff. Charlie's arrogance soon alienates his colleagues and drives Rusty to New York. Determined to win her back before she marries a distinguished author, Charlie enlists the help of his gangster friend, Smiles Benson.
