"The Whistler" series continues with wealthy but lonely John Sinclair, who is advised by his doctor to take a vacation due to his deteriorating health. Traveling to the Great Lakes, Sinclair becomes ill and is taken to a clinic by cab driver Ernie Sparrow. There, he meets nurse Joan Martin, who is engaged to intern Fred Graham. Upon learning he has only a few months to live, Sinclair proposes to Joan, promising her his fortune. Joan accepts, but Fred is not pleased—despite her insistence that she is doing it for his benefit. Six months later, Sinclair, Joan, and Sparrow are living in isolation at a lighthouse. Sinclair's health appears to improve, and he genuinely falls in love with Joan. However, Joan grows weary of the loneliness and confides in Sinclair just as Fred visits. Sinclair invites Fred to stay, further complicating their unusual arrangement.
