Streetwise but kind-hearted Maisie Ravier has left her vaudeville days behind, though she still possesses the glamour and charm of her past. While attempting to reach New York for a job, Maisie finds herself stranded in Los Angeles with nothing but the clothes on her back. There, Lt. Paul Scott of the LAPD bunco squad recognizes her potential and recruits her for his team. Convincing his boss, Captain Mead, that he seeks only her professional talents, Paul gets Maisie fast-tracked through police training. During training, Maisie discovers Paul is tough and by-the-book, while Officer Chip Dolan, eager to rejoin the squad, proves to be a more kindred spirit. If Maisie completes her training, she might work on a case involving a fortune teller swindling people out of large sums, not just through fortune readings. To succeed in the bunco squad, Maisie must rely on her street smarts as much as her heart, though her compassion may ultimately reveal the true nature of someone on the team.
