When Boston Blackie's private detective friend Joe Kenyon dies in an auto crash under suspicious circumstances, Blackie offers to take his place as a guard at a party hosted by the wealthy Mrs. Carter, who owns one of the world's most expensive pearl necklaces. His friend Runt accompanies him. During the party, the necklace vanishes while Mrs. Carter and her dancing instructor, Igor Borio, entertain the guests. Inspector Farraday arrives and quickly finds the pearls in Blackie's pocket, making Blackie his prime suspect. Blackie and the Runt escape and investigate further. Searching the apartment of Mrs. Carter's niece, Doris Bradley, Blackie discovers the pearls hidden in the lining of a coat belonging to Doris's friend Joan Howell, who is in love with Borio.
