Bertha Fytte is a serious and strict schoolmistress, not well liked by the schoolgirls. Her sister, Cicely, runs a nearby circus with mixed success, much to Bertha's disapproval. When Bertha abruptly elopes, Cicely is persuaded to take her place at the school for just one day. Cicely muddles through teaching advanced geometry and forms an unlikely alliance with van Gaard, the romantic American music teacher, who reveals his qualifications may not be entirely authentic. With the school headmistress retiring and Bertha in line for the job, Cicely must decide whether to help her sister by maintaining the deception—and if she can put on a convincing performance.
