Ralph Burton, a miner, is trapped underground for several days due to a cave-in. Upon escaping, he discovers that humanity appears to have been wiped out by a nuclear holocaust. Making his way to a deserted New York City, Ralph begins to build a new life for himself. His solitude is broken when he encounters Sarah Crandall, another survivor, and together they form a close friendship. The dynamic changes with the arrival of Benson Thacker, who has sailed his small boat into the city's harbor.
