Brad Collins, a former stevedore, is climbing the ranks in a shipping company when his past as a Communist Party member is used against him by local agitators who try to coerce him into causing trouble. When Brad refuses to comply, the seductive Christine targets his brother-in-law, Don, in an effort to force Brad's hand. Meanwhile, Brad's wife, Nan, notices the mounting pressure on both her husband and her brother. As Nan begins her own investigation, the party boss, Vanning, responds with ruthless tactics to protect the Communist plot.
