County Attorney Dave Connors helps Julia Norman with her troubled father, Jefferson Norman, prompting Julia to leave Jericho, Kansas, to pursue a law degree. Years later, Algeria Wedge—the ambitious new wife of Dave's best friend, Tucker Wedge—schemes to win Dave's affection, leading to tension with Dave's wife, Belle. Rebuffed by Dave, Algeria convinces a political boss to back Tucker in a congressional race against Dave. Julia returns to Jericho as a lawyer, and she and Dave fall in love. When Dave decides not to run for Congress, Julia fears she is holding him back and leaves for Kansas City. Tucker wins the election and he and Algeria move to Washington. Later, as Tucker runs for the Senate, Dave decides to challenge him. When Marjorie Ransome kills a drunk in self-defense, Julia returns to Jericho to help Dave, now in private practice, with Marjorie's defense. Still resentful, Algeria tries to destroy Dave's senate campaign by having Tucker's newspaper announce that Dave is being sued for divorce, with Julia named as correspondent.
