Engineers Richard McAllan and Frederick Robbins secure financial backing for an ambitious project to build a tunnel connecting England and America. Their strongest supporter is Varlia Lloyd, the influential daughter of one of the investors, who often uses her clout to keep the project afloat. Mack’s wife, Ruth, also lends her support, but his prolonged absences due to the tunnel's demands strain their marriage and affect his relationship with their son. Over the course of years, the team faces both financial intrigues and daunting physical obstacles beneath the ocean floor. As the tunnel nears completion, Mack's marriage and friendship with Robbie are put to the ultimate test.
