Set in an Italian-American neighborhood in Louisiana, the story unfolds after truck driver Rosario Delle Rose is killed by police while smuggling. His widow, Serafina, suffers a miscarriage and withdraws into herself over the following years, attempting to control her teenage daughter, Rosa, and keep her sheltered. On a pivotal day, Rosa breaks free from her mother’s grip; Serafina discovers that Rosario had an affair; and a new, handsome Italian truck driver brings a fresh hope into Serafina's life.
