The Prowler 1951 DVD - Van Heflin / Evelyn Keyes

In California, the attractive housewife Susan Gilvray notices a prowler outside her home in a remote area and calls the police. Officer Webb Garwood and his partner respond but find nothing suspicious. Later, Webb returns under the guise of checking on Susan's wellbeing, and she invites him in for coffee. Webb soon discovers that Susan is married to John Gilvray, a middle-aged broadcaster who hosts a late-night radio show. Webb and Susan realize they come from the same hometown, sparking an affair between them. When John becomes suspicious, the affair ends, but Webb devises a plan to get rid of John, ultimately killing him and staging it to look like an accident. Webb stands trial but is found not guilty. He leaves the police force and manipulates John's brother to get close to Susan again, learning that John's marriage to Susan was troubled and childless.
