Set during the Napoleonic Wars, "The Pride and the Passion" depicts the determination of Spanish patriots as they struggle to reclaim their country from the advancing French forces. They take on the difficult task of restoring and transporting the cannon across Spain, aiming to use it against the French stronghold in Avila and breach its formidable walls. A British officer, Captain Anthony Trumbull, arrives with orders to secure the cannon for England to prevent its capture by the French. However, his mission depends on the cooperation of the Spanish peasants, led by a resolute shoemaker and his spirited girlfriend. Trumbull needs their manpower to move the weapon, while the shoemaker demands that they first use it to help liberate Avila. An uneasy alliance is formed: after attacking Avila, Trumbull will receive assistance to take the cannon to his ship.
