Emily Gault arrives at the Carrell mansion, determined to rekindle an old relationship with Guy Carrell, despite the disapproval of his sister, Kate. Guy eventually overcomes his all-consuming fear of being buried alive long enough to marry Emily, but he soon becomes obsessed again, designing a crypt to ensure he never falls victim to his worst nightmare. Attempting to prove he is cured of his phobia, Guy opens his father's tomb and is shocked into a catatonic state. His deepest fears are realized as he is buried alive—unaware that the treachery of someone close to him is the true cause of his fate.
