Cliff Barton, vice chairman of Amalgamated World Metals, is set to marry his boss George Salt's niece, but duty calls when Salt sends him to London for a high-stakes business deal. Salt, who considers Cliff his protégé and plans to hand over the company to him one day, stresses that business always takes priority. While in London, Cliff must conceal Salt’s plan to seize control of a British company from its owner, Mr. Carew, under the guise of a simple merger. At Mrs. Salt's request, Cliff visits a London charity, only to discover it is actually a front for prostitution, operated by Miriam Linka, a German refugee. Torn between business loyalty and his conscience, Cliff refuses to betray Carew and unexpectedly falls in love with Miriam, persuading her to return to America with him to marry her. This causes Salt to turn against him, attempting to frame Cliff as the villain in the business scheme and spreading damaging accusations that Miriam is both a prostitute and a Communist. Cliff must fight to clear his name and protect the woman he loves.
