In a London boarding house, several residents teeter on the edge of disaster and despair. Stasia, the housemaid, longs for happiness but is treated poorly and threatened with harsh punishments from her past. Vivian, a beautiful young woman, loves the architect Chris but must marry the unlikable Mr. Wright to pay her parents' debts. Miss Kite, fearing age and lost beauty, mocks those around her, while her friend Mr. Larkcom privately dreams of being a concert pianist instead of selling phonograph records. A mysterious stranger arrives and begins to influence the unhappy residents, helping them glimpse the possibility of happiness. However, the cynical Mr. Wright is determined to keep them in misery and plots against the angelic newcomer, who resides in the third-floor back room.
