Set in 1930s Belgium, "The Nun's Story" follows Gabrielle van der Mal, the strong-willed daughter of prominent surgeon Dr. Pascin Van Der Mal. Gabrielle chooses to leave her upper-class family behind to join a convent, hoping to serve as a nun in Congo treating patients with tropical diseases. After bidding farewell to her family, she devotes herself to the strict, often humiliating rules of convent life—including vows of silence and humility. After a challenging period working in a mental institution, Gabrielle (now Sister Luke) is finally sent to the Congo, where she partners with the talented but skeptical Dr. Fortunati. Sister Luke excels as a nurse, and Dr. Fortunati successfully cures her of tuberculosis. Eventually, Sister Luke is ordered back to Belgium. When World War II erupts, she learns her father has been killed while aiding the resistance. Struggling with her inability to remain neutral in the face of her country's occupation, Sister Luke ultimately decides to leave religious life.
