Set in the Pacific during World War II, the film depicts a stark contrast between privileged officers and frontline soldiers. While the officers enjoy comfort and view war as a game they are destined to win, the common soldiers are mere pawns. When the campaign slows, a commander sends a squad to a strategic mountain behind enemy lines to observe Japanese troop movements. The team is initially led by a cynical, ruthless sergeant, Sgt. Sam Croft, who will stop at nothing to accomplish the mission—even scavenging gold from enemy corpses. However, after a confrontation, a wealthy and inexperienced lieutenant, Lt. Robert Hearn, is reassigned to command the mission. As the squad faces brutal conditions, both the lieutenant and sergeant are driven by different motivations but share a determination to ensure the mission's success. Cast: - Aldo Ray as Sgt.
