At Midwestern University, three teachers are forced out of their jobs over suspicions of communist sympathies. Trustee Ed Keller threatens the mild-mannered English Professor Tommy Turner when Tommy plans to read a controversial prose piece in his class. Tommy is disappointed when his wife, Ellen, also discourages him from reading the passage. Complicating matters, Ellen's former boyfriend, football star Joe Ferguson, returns for homecoming weekend and takes Ellen out dancing, leading Tommy to fear he may lose her.
