Eugene Morgan, a charming and ambitious young man, wishes to marry Isabel Amberson, the daughter of a wealthy upper-class family. Isabel, however, opts for the stability of Wilbur Minafer, and their only child, George, grows up spoiled and self-centered. Years later, Eugene returns as a widowed and successful automobile manufacturer. Following Wilbur's death, Eugene rekindles his courtship with Isabel, who is now receptive. However, George, fiercely protective of his mother, and his eccentric Aunt Fanny, conspire to thwart the romance. As misfortune strikes the Amberson family, George ultimately faces the consequences of his actions.
