Set on the island of Manukura, a French colony in the South Seas, 'The Hurricane' follows Terangi, a joyful leader among the natives and first mate on Captain Nagle's ship, the Katopua. After marrying Marama, Terangi sails to Tahiti where a bar altercation with a politically connected Frenchman results in Terangi being unjustly sentenced to forced labor. Despite Captain Nagle's pleas, the strict Governor Eugene DeLaage refuses to intervene. Terangi's repeated escape attempts only increase his sentence, but after eight long years, he finally breaks free. His return to Manukura is met with celebration, but the island soon finds itself in the path of a devastating hurricane, threatening the lives of everyone there.
