Jock Wallace and Kitty Brant are rival thoroughbred horse breeders. When Jock outbids Kitty for a promising but injured horse, Abby R, paying $500, he angers the owner's niece, Leslie Hale, who believes the horse is worth much more. Jock is drawn to Leslie and invites her to the Kentucky Derby, hoping to impress her with one of his horses. However, Leslie is involved with diplomat Bill Van Dyke and plans to join him in England for the coronation of King George VI. Determined, Jock follows Leslie to England and enters his horse in the Ascot Gold Cup. As their paths continue to cross, Jock and Leslie fall in love and marry while on a boat to Argentina for another race. Their marriage is soon tested by Jock's broken promises, increasing racing debts, and the return of Kitty. Leslie, pregnant and distressed, suffers a miscarriage and leaves Jock. However, with Valiant—a horse Jock gifted her—Leslie finds success as the horse wins major races across the country. In the Kentucky Derby, Jock enters a new horse gifted by Kitty to compete against Valiant. Leslie’s horse narrowly wins, but in the end Jock wins back her love.
