The Flame Within 1935 DVD - Ann Harding / Herbert Marshall

Wealthy Lillian Belton attempts suicide by taking a drug overdose. Her physician, Dr. Gordon Phillips, refers her to psychiatrist Dr. Mary White for treatment. While at Mary’s office, Lillian calls Jack Kerry and then tries to jump out of the window, but Mary intervenes and discovers that Jack is at the root of Lillian’s distress. Jack, an alcoholic who is indifferent to Lillian’s deep affection, eventually agrees, at Mary’s urging, to enter a rehabilitation program. After eight months and several setbacks, Jack is apparently cured, but he has developed a strong attachment to Mary. Mary reminds Jack that Lillian’s dependence on him matches his on her. Ultimately, Lillian and Jack marry and appear happy. Meanwhile, Gordon tries to persuade Mary to leave her practice and marry him, but Mary is too devoted to her work. At a costume ball, Jack confesses his love for Mary, insisting she must reciprocate. Lillian becomes jealous, accuses Mary of trying to steal Jack, and threatens a scandalous divorce. Despite her feelings, Mary encourages Jack to honor his marriage to Lillian, while she contemplates her own relationship with Gordon.
