Janos Szabo, a kind and innocent immigrant to America, finds his new life shattered when he is caught in a fire that leaves his face horribly burned and disfigured. Despite being a skilled craftsman, his appearance makes it impossible for him to find work, and he is driven by despair to turn to crime. Discovering an unfortunate aptitude for the criminal life, he soon earns enough money to purchase a lifelike mask to hide his scars. Haunted by his actions, Janos struggles with his conscience and wonders if he is in too deep to ever escape.
