Dr. Michael Corday, a recent graduate from Harvard Medical School, is the son of Dr. John Corday, a renowned New York City surgeon who struggles to stop controlling the lives of his adult children. Michael's sister, Fabienne, runs away from home. Following his father's advice, Michael initially treats his patients with callous indifference, but his perspective changes when he falls in love with a patient. After marrying her, he sets up his own medical practice on the Lower East Side of New York City. The story brings the family together following the loss of one of their own, and it addresses sensitive topics rarely discussed in 1940s films, including unwed pregnancy and a botched abortion.
