Mary Loring, a former American cabaret singer, faces intense jealousy from her husband, Mark, after a tragic car accident causes her to lose their unborn child and leaves Mark sterile. Mark's father, the traditional Sir John Loring, has always disapproved of their marriage and attempts to drive them apart. Hoping a child might save their relationship, Mary suggests artificial insemination. Although Mark reluctantly agrees, he ultimately cannot accept the situation when Mary becomes pregnant and decides to leave her.
