Sally Warren, a rich and beautiful Southern heiress, has a passion for horse-racing and running her horse farm, despite her husband Jeff's aversion to horses. Jeff Warren is a successful author, Civil War scholar, and popular lecturer on the ladies’ club circuit. Their seven-year marriage is tested by their clashing interests: Jeff's misguided purchase of an old horse, and Sally's well-meaning but naive gift of a desk supposedly owned by Jefferson Davis, highlight their differences. Tensions rise further as Jeff grows jealous of Sally's close friendship with childhood companion and fellow horse breeder, Lance Gale, while Sally becomes irked by the persistent presence of Mary Lou Medford, a flirtatious literary admirer of Jeff. The couple's squabbles eventually land them in divorce court, but a turn of events—and a helpful horse—may just rekindle their love.
