Set during the Victorian era, "The Blue Lagoon" follows Emmeline Foster and Michael Reynolds, two British children who survive a shipwreck in the South Pacific. Stranded on a lush tropical island with the kindly sailor Paddy Button, they must adapt to their new environment. After Paddy's death, Emmeline and Michael are left to fend for themselves, relying on their ingenuity and the resources of their paradise home. As the years go by, Emmeline and Michael grow into athletic young adults. Their childhood friendship matures into romantic love, and they start a family together, living as common-law husband and wife in isolation. Their tranquil existence is disturbed by the arrival of two ruthless traders who exploit their son by forcing him to dive for pearls, but the traders ultimately destroy each other. Haunted by memories of the outside world and concerned about their child's future, Emmeline persuades Michael to leave the island. Venturing into the open sea, they fall victim to exposure when their boat becomes stranded. They are discovered by a British ship, but the film ends on an ambiguous note regarding their ultimate fate.
