An investigative reporter, Thomas Jefferson Tyler, uses a clever ruse to meet Sara Farley, a grocery-store heiress about whom he has written unflattering stories. He is surprised to find Sara down-to-earth and genuinely engaging. Just as he prepares to publish an honest and admiring article, Sara discovers his true identity. Believing he plans to write more lies, she retaliates by publicly announcing that they are married. This sparks a comedic escalation: Tyler loses his job, the pair spend time in jail, and eventually he sues her for libel. The court must intervene to set things right, as the chaos unfolds.
