Jim Lane is a test pilot whose dangerous profession is matched by his fast-living, reckless personal life. Living paycheck to paycheck and frequently in debt, Jim hopes his lucrative career will eventually secure his future. During a coast-to-coast record attempt, his plane, the Drake Bullet, suffers a mechanical failure, forcing him to land in a Kansas farm owned by the Barton family. There, he meets Ann Barton, and the two quickly fall in love and get married, moving to New York. Jim's mechanic and loyal friend, "Gunner" Morris, doubts whether Jim can adapt to married life, given his risky lifestyle. Ann soon realizes she must compete with Jim's devotion to flying, even referring to the sky as his mistress. As she sees the dangers firsthand, especially as Jim continues to push his planes to their limits, Ann worries about becoming a widow, just as she's seen happen before to other pilots' wives. The story asks whether Jim and Ann's marriage can withstand the pressures created by Jim's perilous career.
