On the day of his retirement, Rear Admiral Jonathan L. Scott reflects on his pivotal role in introducing aircraft carriers to the U.S. Navy. Following World War I, the military underwent significant downsizing, and opportunities to develop carrier-bound air capabilities were limited. Early aircraft were not designed for landing on carriers, leading to deadly accidents during training. Nonetheless, Scott and a group of dedicated colleagues pursued their vision of developing aircraft and carriers tailored for naval aviation. Their perseverance paid off, as the value of aircraft carriers was ultimately demonstrated during World War II—most notably at the Battle of Midway and throughout the conflict.
