Set in Mississippi before and during the Civil War, 'Tap Roots' follows Morna Dabney, who is engaged to soldier Clay MacIvor. Morna's grandfather, Big Sam Dabney, established their prosperous plantation near Levington but remains loyal to the Union. Morna's father, Hoab, shares these sentiments. As Mississippi secedes, Hoab attempts to keep the plantation and surrounding area neutral, enlisting the support of newspaperman Keith Alexander. While Keith falls in love with Morna, Clay joins the Confederate Army and leads a raid to punish the neutral citizens. Morna, aided by her grandfather's Choctaw friend Tishomingo, strives to thwart the attack, making great sacrifices for her home and true love.
