Captain Mary Morley (Paulette Goddard), a WAC marital-relations expert nicknamed "Captain Lonelyhearts," returns from overseas after escorting G.I. war brides. She hopes to reconcile with her estranged husband and former law partner, Peter Morley (Fred MacMurray). However, Peter, who has fallen for the beautiful Gloria Fay (Arleen Whelan), greets her at the airport with divorce papers. Hoping to persuade Mary later, Peter invites her to dinner at the Ski Club. Jack Lindsay (Macdonald Carey), Peter's client who has been using their apartment, mistakes Mary for a bridesmaid and inquires about Gloria. Upon learning about Gloria, Mary asks Jack to bring her to the dinner. Still in love with Peter, Mary refuses to sign the divorce papers and leaves with Jack. Mary is then ordered to Fort Sheridan, with both Peter and Jack boarding her train—Peter seeking her signature, and Jack, who has fallen for Mary, hoping the same. Jack advises Peter to behave so obnoxiously that Mary will want to end things. When they reach Chicago, Peter puts on an outlandish act, convincing Mary to finally agree to the divorce. However, as Mary and Peter go through their belongings together, they reminisce and realize their disagreements were trivial. The couple reconciles, leaving Jack and Gloria behind.
