Set in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, "Storm at Daybreak" tells the story of Dushan, the Serbian mayor of a Hungarian town, who visits Sarajevo for the parade of Archduke Ferdinand. There, he reunites with Geza, an old friend now in the Hungarian Army, and invites him to visit his home and meet his new wife. As tensions rise between Serbs and Hungarians in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the assassination of the Archduke sparks the onset of war. Dushan is torn between keeping his Serbian townspeople loyal to Austro-Hungary and protecting them from the suspicious Hungarian army. Meanwhile, his new wife, Irina, secretly aligns with the Serbs, hiding deserters in the family barn. When Geza comes to search for deserters, Irina flirts with him to create a distraction, and with Dushan’s help, they aid the deserters’ escape. Geza suspects the deception but lets the deserters go because he and Irina are falling in love with one another. When the city falls under Serbian control after the war, Panto, once a servant, becomes the chief of police and seeks Geza just as Dushan grows suspicious of Irina’s relationship with Geza.
