For thirty years, John has lived a solitary life following the tragic death of Moonyeen Clare. His close friend Dr. Owen persuades him to care for his niece, Kathleen, who was orphaned when her parents were lost at sea. As the years pass, Kathleen grows into a young woman who is the image of Moonyeen. Willie desires her hand in marriage, but sparks fly when she meets Kenneth Wayne one stormy night. John is horrified, as Kenneth's father was responsible for Moonyeen's death on her wedding day—an act he has never forgiven. When Ken leaves for war, John forbids any marriage between him and Kathleen. Ken agrees to John's wishes, but Kathleen does not. Four years later, Ken returns from the war, now crippled and concealing his condition, planning to depart for America.
