After being fired by his best friend, a movie producer, director John Gayle finds himself at a carnival where he discovers Mary O'Leary, a clever Irish girl. Hoping to revive his career, Gayle brings Mary home and embarks on a series of "Pygmalion"-style experiments to turn her into a refined actress. Passing her off as a French heiress, Mary is quickly hired by the movie studio, and Gayle is brought back to direct her. However, when Mary reveals the truth about her identity, the entire scheme unravels and Gayle is fired once again.
