Alison Courtland, a wealthy New Yorker, awakens to find herself on a train bound for Boston with no memory of how she got there. When she contacts her husband, Richard, the police listen in and hear Richard claim that Alison had previously threatened him with a gun. During Alison’s return flight home, fellow passenger Bruce Elcott meets and falls for her, sensing her unhappiness. Upon returning, Alison's husband convinces her to begin sessions with Dr. Rhinehart, an alleged psychiatrist. However, it is soon revealed that Rhinehart is actually Charles Vernay, a photographer hired by Richard himself. Richard is entangled in an affair and schemes to drive Alison to suicide in order to inherit her fortune. Elcott discovers the plot just as Alison, apparently hypnotized, is about to leap from a balcony. He unmasks Vernay as Richard’s accomplice. In a violent climax, Richard tries to further his plan by drugging Alison and attempting to pin a murder on her, but Vernay, enraged by betrayal, shoots Richard. Vernay is ultimately killed after a dramatic chase with Elcott, falling through a skylight. The story concludes with Elcott and Alison finding happiness together. **Cast:** - Claudette Colbert as Alison Courtland - Robert Cummings as Bruce Elcott - Don Ameche as Richard W.
