Pat Evans, a German expatriate loyal to her new home in the United States, finds herself targeted by a shadowy German bund operating in the Long Island area. While fending off the advances of the sophisticated but predatory Andrew Hendon, Pat knocks him unconscious in self-defense aboard a private plane owned by Cortland Grand, a wealthy friend of detective Nick Carter. When Hendon is discovered dead—stabbed with a nail file—the stakes quickly rise, especially after the co-pilot is also murdered. Fortunately, famed New York detective Nick Carter is among the passengers. Though off-duty, he teams up with his eccentric sidekick Beeswax and the resourceful Southern detective Chris Cross to uncover a secret cell of Nazi saboteurs and Fifth Columnists.
