Sam Gallagher (Pat O'Brien), a former foreign correspondent turned United States Government agent, goes undercover at the Seaboard Shipyards to thwart a gang of Nazi spies plotting sabotage. With help from his brother Jeff (Chester Morris), whom he hasn't seen in seven years, Sam secures a job as a "pileback" to investigate the shady activities at the yard. To strengthen his cover, FBI agent Jill McGann (Carole Landis) poses as Sam's wife, and two children, 6-year-old Paul (Richard Lyon) and 4-year-old Joan (Carol Nugent), complete the fabricated family. Jeff becomes suspicious of Sam's sudden appearance and shares his doubts with Lea Damoran (Ruth Warrick), a woman both brothers once loved. Meanwhile, Sam befriends the shipyard crew and uncovers the identities of the saboteurs one by one. The enemy is led by Brownell (Tom Tully), secretly Colonel Von Braun of the German Gestapo, who plans to blow up the yard while an aircraft carrier is docked there. As Sam works to foil the plot, Jeff's meddlesome actions inadvertently threaten the success of the mission.
