Exotic dancer Virginia Wilson is traumatized after witnessing a man get shot moments after he attempts to attack her in a shower. Seeking help, she turns to psychiatrist Dr. Greenwood, who becomes infatuated with her and gradually takes control of her life. Despite this, Virginia insists on continuing her career at the El Madhouse nightclub, owned by the tough Joann "Gypsy" Mapes (played by Gypsy Rose Lee). When Virginia is late one night, Gypsy delivers a comically bad rendition of "Put the Blame on Mame." Virginia soon becomes a suspect in a string of murders, each victim having purchased a bizarre sculpture known as the Screaming Mimi—created by her step-brother Charlie, who was also responsible for shooting her attacker. Handsome columnist Bill Sweeny steps in to unravel the mystery surrounding Virginia and the murders.
