Mary Blake arrives at Blackie Norton's Paradise gambling hall and beer garden seeking work as a singer. Blackie embarrasses her by asking to see her legs, but he hires her nonetheless. Fainting from hunger, Mary endures a difficult start. Nob Hill socialite Jack Burley and Maestro Baldini from the Tivoli Opera House witness her performance and offer her a chance to sing opera. However, Mary is bound by a two-year contract to Blackie, which she honors despite her disappointment. When Blackie puts up posters of her in tights, she finally leaves for the Tivoli. Blackie attempts to stop her new career with an injunction but is struck by the power of her performance as Marguerite in 'Faust.' He proposes marriage, and she agrees to return to Paradise as his kind of singer, but Father Tim, Blackie's childhood friend, intervenes. After a heated confrontation, Mary leaves. She eventually becomes the star of the Tivoli and Blackie's club is shut down. At the annual 'Chicken Ball,' Mary sings a stirring rendition of 'San Francisco' on behalf of the Paradise and wins the $10,000 prize, which Blackie throws to the floor. As she storms out, the infamous San Francisco earthquake strikes, devastating the city. Amidst chaos – collapsing buildings, fires, and military intervention – Blackie wanders the ruins until he finds Father Tim and, together, they locate Mary at a Salvation Army camp. Joined by hundreds of survivors, they look upon the ruins as they transform into the vision of a rebuilt city, accompanied by a reprise of the title song.
