Susan Miller, a saleswoman at a department store, dreams of living a glamorous life she believes is out of reach. Her life changes when she meets May Worthington and Warren, a duo of con artists who pose as her relatives to swindle millionaires. Persuaded by their offer, Susan joins them and heads to Palm Beach, hoping to fulfill her dreams. There, she meets John Wheeler, whom the con artists mistake for a millionaire. They sell John a stolen boat, taking his entire $15,000 life savings. After moving on to ingratiate themselves with the wealthy Tod Fenwick, Susan—now posing as "Linda Worthington"—finds herself pursued by Tod. Complications arise when John reappears and confides in "Linda" about a detective seeking the fake captain who sold him the boat. John, in truth only a modestly paid clerk, proposes to Susan, and she accepts against May’s wishes. Meanwhile, Warren intercepts a marriage proposal from Tod to "Linda" and tries to blackmail her. To return John's stolen money without revealing her involvement, Susan enlists Colonel Prentiss, who rigs the gambling machines so John can win his money back. As Susan and John attempt to leave town together, Tod appears, forcing Susan to keep her true identity hidden from John.
