Ellen Neal is hired as a servant in the wealthy Winfield household by the butler, Thomas Wroxton, who harbors romantic intentions towards her. Wroxton rules the staff with an iron fist, demanding a sizable cut of their wages as his "commission." Despite his efforts, Ellen resists his advances. During the family's vacation in New England, Ellen becomes romantically involved with the Winfields' son, Richard, a college student. Their secret marriage leads to Ellen becoming pregnant before Richard returns to school. When Wroxton, out of spite, informs the Winfields of Ellen's pregnancy, they initially offer support—until they discover the child is their own grandson. This revelation sparks a bitter divorce battle, but ultimately the couple is reconciled.
