While vacationing in Italy, Nick Morell—the son of John Morell, a renowned English philosopher and amateur musician, and his wife Catherine—befriends young Guido. Morell soon discovers the boy's extraordinary instinct for orchestration and his phenomenal musical memory. Their neighbors, Signor and Signora Bondini, notice Guido's talents as well. Signora Bondini urges his parents to allow her to oversee his musical education. Despite their deep love for their son, the Morells feel compelled to let the world experience his brilliance and agree to her request. Under the guidance of Dr. Lorenzo, Guido flourishes musically, but Signora Bondini isolates him—denying all contact with his parents and intercepting their letters. Guido's fame grows as he tours Europe, with Signora Bondini basking in the reflected glory of her 'discovery.' She plans to take him to America and even prepares adoption papers, escalating the family's distress.
