Teenager Barbara Vining (Glynis Johns) develops an unrequited crush on her Latin teacher, Stephen Barlow (Leo Genn). When Barlow's wife, Kay (Gene Tierney), learns of the infatuation, she confronts Barbara, who is so humiliated that she runs away. Stephen follows her to a riverside to try to calm her, but Barbara disappears and does not return home for three days. With Barbara missing, Stephen becomes the target of community suspicion and gossip, facing accusations of wrongdoing with no evidence. The scandal nearly destroys his career and marriage. Aunt Evelyn (Pamela Brown), Barbara's gossipy spinster aunt, exacerbates the situation with her innuendo and interference.
