Dan Hardesty, a suave convicted murderer, is apprehended by police detective Steve Burke in Hong Kong and escorted onto the SS Maloa, bound for San Francisco. Aboard the ship, Dan falls for Joan Ames, a terminally ill socialite, who does not know that Dan's ultimate destination is San Quentin. As their romance blossoms, both understand that their time together is limited. They make a pact to reunite at a Mexican night club on New Year's Eve. As they part ways in San Francisco, they face the knowledge that the odds are stacked against them.
