Dan Pritchard works for Pritchard and Pritchard in San Francisco and is in love with Maisie, whom his friend, a newspaper reporter, refers to as "the icebox." When one of his ships returns to port, Dan learns that the captain has contracted leprosy, entrusting Dan with the guardianship of his South Sea island daughter, Tamea. Tamea quickly develops feelings for Dan and is unwilling to do anything without his affection. However, she soon realizes she is fundamentally different from Dan and Maisie, which frustrates her. Dan decides to leave his life behind and live on the island with Tamea, only to discover that paradise is not what he imagined.
