When conceited singer Garry Mitchell refuses to renew his radio contract, agent Doug Blake sets out to discover fresh talent to replace him. In New York, Doug finds Martha Gibson, a single mother with a remarkable voice, and encourages her to move to Hollywood. Doug faces challenges convincing the show's sponsor to accept Martha, employing every trick to launch her career. As he and Martha work together, Doug finds himself falling in love with her—only to complicate matters further when Martha becomes attracted to Garry.
