In New York City, ruthless mobster Johnny Vanning takes over the Club Intimate and forces the hostesses to entertain patrons with drinks, dancing, and a push to gamble. Mary "Dwight" Strauber and her roommates—Dorothy 'Gabby' Marvin, Emmy Lou Eagan, Florrie Liggett, and Estelle Porter—are swept up in Vanning’s criminal world. When Mary’s date loses a large sum at the casino and pays with a bad check, the mobsters follow him, leading to tragedy. The next day, Mary’s innocent younger sister Betty visits, unaware of Mary’s true profession. Soon after, police arrest the women, revealing that Mary's customer has been found dead with her address in his pocket. The district attorney, David Graham, pressures Mary to testify against Vanning, but Vanning’s lawyer advises her to mislead the authorities, allowing the criminal to escape justice. When Betty is later victimized by Vanning and his henchmen—left for dead in a river—Mary turns to Graham, determined to bring Vanning down despite the dangers and violence of the criminal underworld.
