Maracaibo 1958 DVD - Cornel Wilde / Jean Wallace

Set in the 1950s, "Maracaibo" follows Texas oilman Vic Scott as he visits oil-rich Venezuela. There, he reconnects with old friends who own several oil derricks, one of which is engulfed in flames. The owners have no professionals on hand to extinguish such fires, and given its offshore location, the blaze threatens to spiral out of control, endangering the other 6,000 derricks in the region. Memories linger of a disastrous fire in 1939 that devastated a nearby town. Luckily, Vic is an expert in extinguishing oil fires, having served as an underwater demolition specialist with the U.S. Navy during World War II. His friends, Miguel Orlando and adopted son Lago Orlando, ask for his help to put out the fire at derrick number seven—a perilous job that will require a controlled underwater explosion with nitroglycerin. While tackling this dangerous mission, Vic also finds himself drawn to Laura Kingsley, a New York novelist visiting Venezuela for research. Laura fears for Vic's safety given the hazards of his line of work.
